Scottsdale, Ariz. – Thinking about getting a tattoo? Don’t know where to start or who to trust? EZ Tattoo, Scottsdale’s oldest tattoo shop, has some tattoo tips for helping you choose the right tattoo artist.

“The No. 1 thing any person considering a tattoo should care about is the reputation and cleanliness of the tattoo shop,” said EZ Tattoo owner Myron Larrabee. “A shop with a good reputation in the industry and the discipline to keep its shop clean tells you a lot about the artists that work there.”

Tattoo safety is important to Larrabee and his artists. For instance, Scottsdale tattoo shop EZ Tattoo is one of the only tattoo shops in Phoenix that performs spore tests every two weeks on its equipment. The shop sends the samples it gets from its autoclave machine (an instrument used to sterilize equipment) to an independent lab regularly, ensuring that all equipment is sterile and your tattoo experience is a safe one.

EZ Tattoo promotes safe tattoo work by utilizing stainless steel wherever it can (stainless steel is much easier to clean and sterilize) and employs separate “clean” and “dirty” rooms for its equipment, removing the risk of cross-contamination.

“A clean shop is a sterile shop,” Larrabee said. “We know that cleaning a shop twice a day ensures the safest possible environment for our customers and for tattoo safety.”

Artist Portfolios
The next thing anyone considering a tattoo should concern themselves with are the portfolios of the artists at the shop.

“An artist’s portfolio is his or her resume,” said James Minor, a tattoo artist at EZ Tattoo. “You can find out a lot about the artist from their previous work.”

Iron Dan, a 30-year tattoo artist who works at EZ Tattoo in Scottsdale, agrees.

“Portfolios are everything,” he said. “You want to look at everything. Photos of outline work, in-progress tattoos that are shaded and tattoos that are finished.

“You’re not necessarily going to see the design that you like in an artist’s portfolio,” Iron Dan said. “But what you are going to see is whether or not the artist can apply the tattoo properly. Do the tattoos have solid line work, solid color and proper depth?”

Color vs. Black Tattoos
Iron Dan says it’s also important to look for a variety of work – both color and black tattoo work.

“The molecular structure of color is different,” he said. “It’s heavier so it’s more of a process to work it into the skin. You want to see that your artist can pull off color tattoos as well as he can black tattoos.”

But perhaps most importantly, you should feel comfortable with the shop you’re in and the artist who will do the work.

“Everybody has different styles,” said Ivan Rials of EZ Tattoo. “Ultimately you want somebody who’s going to put down good, clean, solid work. Something that can last a lifetime.”

Ever since he was a teenager, Hector Salazar has been exposed to the world of tattoos and art. Born in California but raised in Arizona, Hector has been fascinated with the overall tattoo culture. “I got my hands on my first tattoo magazine during high school and I’ve been hooked ever since.” His interest never took a backseat as he pursued tattooing right after high school and in 2001 he began formalizing his career by completing his apprenticeship under Skylar Feigel.

With more than 8 years of experience working in professional tattoo shops throughout Arizona, Hector has tattooed thousands of designs. Hector is a multifaceted artist and works with his clients’ needs to include custom work, portraits, cover ups, lettering and every variety of designs. He is also proud to say he specializes in black and grey and color realism.

Hector has earned his reputation as delivering outstanding work with a smile. Hector believes “this is an important aspect of tattooing” that has enabled him to work with clients from all over the world. Hector works with only one rule in mind. “Customer service is a priority.”

“Allowing my clients to feel comfortable and to demonstrate they can expect excellent quality work is key.” As of September, 2011 he has been working for EZ Tattoo, and is very excited to be a part of such a “wonderful team.”

For Hector, this milestone is a combination of hard work and dedication and whose effects are entirely reflected on his clients work. For him, working at EZ Tattoo is a blessing and regarding his career, “As far as tattooing goes, it is my life.”

EZ Tattoo, Scottsdale’s oldest tattoo shop, is honoring America’s military this summer by launching “Tattoos for the Brave,” a three-week program designed to offer special discounts for the country’s armed forces members, both past and present.

From Flag Day on June 14 until the Fourth of July, any current or former United States Armed Forces serviceman or servicewoman will receive $100 off any tattoo regularly priced at $250 or more and $50 off any tattoo regularly priced at $150 or more from the Scottsdale tattoo shop.

To be eligible for the “Tattoos for the Brave” special, patrons must show their military I.D. or military DD Form 214. The offer is also available to immediate family members.

“We’re proud of the men and women who make sacrifices every day to ensure our freedom,” said EZ Tattoo owner Myron Larrabee. “This promotion is our way of showing our country’s bravest men and women just how much we care.”

Larrabee said the 21 days between Flag Day and Fourth of July are known as Honor America Days and the concept was the original inspiration for the promotion.

“We thought about how we could best honor our American military,” he said. “We wanted a way to show our appreciation and for us, that way was utilizing our expertise as tattoo artists.”

Thanks to modern technology, the experienced tattoo artists at EZ Tattoo can help customers design any style of tattoo imaginable and have a large selection of work to choose from for generating ideas. From American flags to tribute tattoos, Larrabee said the possibilities are endless at the Scottsdale tattoo shop.

“You’ll leave our shop with a piece of artwork that will make you proud,” he said.

Getting a tattoo can be a very exciting experience. But tattoo fun shouldn’t mean that you ignore tattoo safety. EZ Tattoo, Scottsdale’s original tattoo shop, has for years been the model of a clean and safe tattoo shop and owner Myron Larrabee offers the following tattoo safety tips.

“First and foremost, the tattoo shop you choose should have very high standards when it comes to hygiene and cleanliness,” said Larrabee, owner of the Scottsdale tattoo shop. “Tattoos have moved into the modern age and the standards for cleanliness and safety have moved with them.”

For instance, Scottsdale tattoo shop EZ Tattoo is one of the only tattoo shops in Phoenix that performs spore tests every two weeks on its equipment. The shop sends the samples it gets from its autoclave (an instrument used to sterilize equipment) machine in to an independent lab regularly, ensuring that all equipment is sterile and your tattoo experience is a safe one.

Next, EZ Tattoo promotes safe tattoo work by utilizing stainless steel wherever it can (stainless steel is much easier to clean and sterilize) and employs separate “clean” and “dirty” rooms for its equipment, removing the rick of cross-contamination.

“A clean shop is a sterile shop,” Larrabee said. “We know that cleaning a shop twice a day ensures the safest possible environment for our customers.”

And what about that tattoo needle? Larrabee said EZ Tattoo uses tattoo needles only once. Each needle is then placed in a biohazard container to be disposed of according to health laws.

“We take your health and safety seriously and any other shop you choose should do the same,” Larrabee said.

EZ Tattoo’s new location, located at 909 N. Hayden Road, nearly doubles the space of the original Scottsdale tattoo shop that occupied the corner of Scottsdale and Second Street in old town Scottsdale for almost 17 years. That location sat adjacent to Larrabee’s popular Billet Bar.

The new location provides more of a salon experience and includes private artist rooms that allow customers the opportunity to have tattoos and piercings done without the prying eyes of strangers intruding. A state-of the art clean room ensures safety for customers and a high-tech design room and thousands of design examples ensure that customers receive a work of art tailored to their specific desires.

“Customers demand a higher level of sophistication from a tattoo shop and EZ Tattoo delivers that better than anyone else,” Larrabee said.

Tattoos and piercings are growing forms of self-expression, with more and more first-time customers walking into tattoo shops for their first tattoo or piercing. EZ Tattoo, Scottsdale’s original tattoo shop, has been delivering quality tattoos and piercings for almost two decades and owner Myron Larrabee offers the following tattoo tips.

“First and foremost, you should do your research, making sure to check out the tattoo shop and its artists,” Larrabee said. “Any shop you choose should provide privacy for having the work done, be sterilized and offer a pleasant experience.”

Next, Larrabee says it’s important to have an idea of what type of tattoo you’d like the artist to create for you. These tattoo designs can include lower back tattoos, feminine tattoo designs, ankle tattoos, armbands, sleeves, back tattoos, cross tattoos and even angel tattoos. The Internet age has made it much easier for tattoo artists to find designs and high tech equipment like the Apple iPad can display the artists’ previous work.

“Having my tattoo designs on an Apple iPad allows the customer to browse my work and provides a high definition portfolio for them to choose from,” said EZ Tattoo’s Ivan Rials, who has been a tattoo artist for almost 20 years.

Once you have a tattoo shop picked out and know what you’d like your tattoo to be, Larrabee and Rials both suggest that you consider the size and placement of the artwork.

“It’s important to think about the size of the work you have done,” Rials said. “If we put a lot of detail into a very small space, it’s going to eventually change and become blurry. And putting your first tattoo in an area that you can’t cover up can have implications for your job.”

Another tattoo tip is to eat something before arriving for your appointment. Because tattoo work can take significant chunks of time and because many first-time customers are nervous, getting a tattoo on an empty stomach can be risky.

“It’s very important to keep your blood sugar levels up,” Larrabee said.

Finally, aftercare is a big part of making sure that any tattoo session goes well. That means staying out of the sun for two weeks, staying away from the chlorinated water in swimming pools and not scratching the tattoo area.

“If you follow these tattoo tips, you’ll not only have a successful tattoo appointment, you’ll also have a tattoo to be proud of for years to come,” Larrabee said.

EZ Tattoo’s new location, located at 909 N. Hayden Road, nearly doubles the space of the original shop that occupied the corner of Scottsdale and Second Street in old town Scottsdale for almost 17 years. That location sat adjacent to Larrabee’s popular Billet Bar.

“Customers demand a higher level of sophistication from a tattoo shop and EZ Tattoo delivers that better than anyone else,” Larrabee said.
